PLANS UNVEILED FOR

NEW WAR MEMORIAL

Angleton  County Commissioners voted to approve the proposed plans for a new war memorial to be built on the northwest corner of the Brazoria County courthouse in Angleton.

The memorial, designed by Leslie Bryson with input from the Wall of Honor Committee members, will replace the existing Wall of Honor in the courthouse lobby.

What it looks like:

  • Memorial is comprised of a 40’ pressed concrete circle with three flag poles at the head holding the American, Texas & POW flags
  • Main black granite dedication monument is 6’ tall and 6’ wide
  • On either side of dedication monument are two life-size bronze statues sitting on granite pedestals:  one of Clarence Sasser, Brazoria County’s own Medal of Honor recipient, and the other of a Gold Star mother depicting her thoughts shortly after she has received the folded memorial flag and realizes its meaning.
  • A 6’ granite star in the center to be cut in multiple pieces to give it a 3D effect
  • Encircling the star are 16 - 2’ wide bands of granite tile panels with actual photo reproductions of battle scenes laser-etched on them
  • 12  3 ft. tall black granite monuments encircle the tile panels.  Six will display the names of the military men and women of Brazoria County who have died honorably in service to their country during the six wars:  World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam Conflict, the Gulf War and the War on Terror.  Those names listed on the current Wall of Honor will be transferred to the new memorial and the Wall of Honor will be officially retired.  The other six monuments will represent the six branches of the U. S. military (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marines).
  • Memorial utilizes oak trees currently on site
  • Illumination for nighttime viewing

The Wall of Honor committee, at work since March 20, 2007, is comprised of community members appointed by the county judge and commissioners.  Those members include Chairman John Jerabeck, Robert “Butch” Babineaux, Rick King, Chris Kincheloe, Glen Moody, and Sandy Weems.

Other contributors are Clarence Sasser, Leslie Bryson, Gerald Roberts, Gerald Hendrick, Raymond L. Burroughs, Tim Newton, Nelson Croasdale, Herb Smith, and Carlton Porter, Jack McGuff JR, Hank Prejean, Connie Garner, Sharon Reynolds, Tom & Marcey White, Vickey Kirby, Bill McCain, Jim McCoy, Wayne Dubose.

The anticipated completion date for the project is Memorial Day of 2009.

Funding for the memorial’s estimated $500,000 construction cost is expected to come from grants as well as corporate and individual donors.  Donations are welcome and should be made payable to Brazoria County with a notation of “Wall of Honor Donation” and sent to Brazoria County Treasurer, 111 E. Locust, Rm. 305 Angleton, TX 77515.

For more information about the memorial, view the Powerpoint presentation on the Veterans Service Office web site at www.brazoria-county.com/Veterans or contact John Jerabeck at 979-864-1537.
