The Last Legal Hanging in the State of Texas
On July 30, 1923, Judge Milam S. Munson sentenced Nathan Lee
to be hanged for the murder of John Spurgeon. The sentence was carried out on August 31,
1923, on the courthouse lawn near Cedar Street, Angleton. At Lee's request, One Charlie
Bonner sang a hymn immediately before the trapdoor was sprung. Since that hanging, all
executions have taken place in Huntsville, Texas.
