FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW CAN I CHANGE MY ADDRESS/NAME?

You may change your address by:

1.           Completing a change of ADDRESS/NAME FORM (available at our office);

2.           Faxing or mailing a letter to our office requesting the appropriate changes. PLEASE NOTE:  When faxing or mailing your letter, it must include your OLD ADDRESS, SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, CAUSE NUMBER, PHONE NUMBER AND THE NAMES OF THE PAYOR AND PAYEE.

3.           Calling our office.  (When making your changes by phone we will also require
that you provide us with the proper identification)

It is VERY IMPORTANT to keep your address current at all times.  A change of address with the Post Office does not change your address with the Child Support Office. You will also need to submit an address change with the Child Support Office.  When you make a change of address or a name change with the Brazoria County Child Support Office we will also make the necessary changes to the State Disbursement Unit and the Office of the Attorney General system.

HOW DO I GET CHILD SUPPORT WITHHELD FROM SOMEONES WAGES?

After acquiring the payroll address of the employer, you may request an income withholding order be issued to the employer by completing the REQUEST FOR INCOME WITHHOLDING.  You may appear in person or mail your request to the Brazoria County District Clerk, 111 E Locust, Suite 500, Angleton, TX 77515.  Be sure to sign the request and include a cashier’s check or money order (No Personal Checks Accepted) in the amount $15.00 for the income withholding fee.  The District Clerk will then send a certified copy of the withholding order by certified mail to the employer.

A new request for income withholding form will need to be issued to each new employer every time the payor changes jobs.

WHAT DO I DO IF AN EMPLOYER IS WITHHOLDING MONEY FROM A PAYCHECK FOR CHILD SUPPORT, BUT NOT MAILING IT?

Call the child support office for assistance.  We will then contact the employer in writing regarding their non-compliance with the court’s order, and request that they send payments in a timely manner.

However, the Child Support Office does not have the authority to make an employer obey the court’s order.  You may need to contact an attorney or the Office of the Attorney General if non-compliance persists.
